This morning I awoke and began watching the morning News programs. Seems everyone was reporting the sweepstake fraud perpetrated on an 80-year-old man who died a year ago. The daughter of this man feels that the publishing companies unfairly bilked money from her deceased father. To add to this quandary our legislators are ready to jump on the hysteria and legislate new laws to just handle such a problem.
I agree that the father may have spent his life savings unwisely. In a free country a man should have the right to spend his money unwisely. I believe that the people of Noah's time also felt the same way about Noah. We live in a society that is run by capitalism. In capitalism some people loose money while others make money, usually to the detriment of the looser. It may be the case that the father wanted to give his money to the publishing companies for other reasons than to get rich. I cannot agree that the publishing companies have done anything wrong by using any means legal to increase revenue. After all they HAVE TO MAKE A LIVING, don't they. The problem is not with capitalism; it functions exactly as it always has. The problem really lies with the regulatory government, which selectively uses its power to regulate.
The problem with unsolicited sweepstakes advertisement is the problem with all junk mail. We do not need special legislation to encumber the private sector. We need to quit making the public pay for the private sector to unfairly solicit us. The postal service presently forces the individual to pay the cost of bulk rate mail. We should make the post office charge much more for bulk rate and lower the price for 1st class, which is what we the people use. We should stop subsidizing the junk mail and start subsidizing the 1st class mail. The higher mailing price would be a deterrent to future unwanted solicitation. I think business should use the newspapers not the mail. At least then you would get what you pay for.
We do not need more or new legation we need to utilize what we have already in place. The legislature should work on making what they have already work and not create more work for attorneys by writing legislation specific to the individuals needs. We tax tobacco and liquor at the rate we do because the tax helps pay the cost unto society. Should the post office be any different? Write legislation to protect our freedom and then enforce what we have already.
